Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia said he believes Manchester United would have won the Premier League title without the 25 goals Robin van Persie netted in his first season at Old Trafford.
The Ecuadorian said, “Destiny is a funny thing. We had so much determination at the start of the season because we wanted to make up for last year and win the title. So whilst you can’t doubt what Robin has added, we may have done it without him.”
The Dutchman cranked out his 25 scores in 34 league starts, with an outstanding 118 minutes per goal.
Valencia, last year’s United player of the year, did add, “Robin has great ability, huge skill levels and can almost solve any problem he comes up against. As a winger it is a joy to play and work alongside him.”
It’s hard to imagine that if you simply remove van Persie altogether that United is anywhere near the runaway title winners they were this season. However, it’s still farfetched to think that if the Red Devils had fallen short with their bid for the former Arsenal frontman, they wouldn’t have tried to find similar production elsewhere on the market.
