First Dan Kennedy ran up the field and tried to score a free kick last weekend against Real Salt Lake.
That didn’t happen.
But last night in Chivas USA’s narrow Open Cup win over the LA Blues of the USL Pro, Kennedy stepped up to take a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. The score was locked at 1-1, after Chivas had trailed 1-0.
Kennedy drilled it home straight down the middle. What. A. Moment.
The Goats captain sent waves of disbelief and delight across the onlooking soccer community, on an already special night where upsets and overtime had caused plenty of headlines. And just yesterday we spoke about Club America goalkeeper Moises Munoz scoring a late goal in their dramatic Liga MX title win.
What is going on with ‘keepers scoring?
Either way, maybe all this positive energy will help Chivas pick things up in league action? It certainly won’t harm them.
Speaking about his goal, ‘keeper Kennedy had this to say. “We struggled with some penalties earlier in the year, so we did some competitions and I came out on top. I think I earned it.” Thanks to their goalscoring goalkeeper, Chivas will now face either the LA Galaxy or Carolina RailHawks in the fourth round on June 12.
So due to it being the opening rounds of the Open Cup at LA Blues’ Titan Stadium, not many camera crews were there filming this one.
But don’t worry, someone got it on their cell phone. Thank you technology, you rock.
The evidence of Chivas USA ‘keeper Dan Kennedy scoring the game-winner to send his team through to the fourth round of the Open Cup, is here for all to see.
Now almost every MLS fan will be willing Chivas to get multiple penalties, so Kennedy can soar up the scoring charts. You guys should probably pick him up for your MLS Fantasy teams… just a thought!
