Schalke drew level with Bayer Leverkusen yesterday as the latter dropped points on the road at Hannover and Schalke blasted Hoffenheim.
It stopped a horrible four-match skid for Bayer, but their struggles continue on the pitch.
Now, they received an even bigger blow as midfielder Jens Hegeler, who was substituted off after 24 minutes against Hannover, is out for the season with torn ankle ligaments.
The scans were done this morning, with the club’s official website revealed the disappointing news, “The midfielder has suffered a tear of the anterior ligament in his right ankle and is therefore likely to be out for the rest of the season.”
The club also confirmed Hegeler will have surgery on the ankle as early as Monday.
Hegeler’s injury also comes just three days before Bayer’s second Champions League leg with Paris Saint-Germain, although the Germans trail from a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 scoreline.
The midfielder has been a workhorse for the squad, both in the starting lineup and off the bench. However, possibly not a coincidence, Hegeler has only seen the pitch for 87 minutes during Bayer’s recent Bundesliga skid.
