Gerard Pique signs new deal at Barcelona

With a new era about to be ushered in at the Nou Camp, there will be at least one familiar face sticking around.

Star center back Gerard Pique has signed a new contract to stay with Barcelona.

Pique, 27, put pen to paper on a new four-year deal as the Spanish international is a key cog in the Catalan clubs masterplan. He will be part of the Blaugrana for quite some time but the ball-playing center back hasn’t always been with the Spanish giants.

He left Barcelona’s academy as a teenager to sign for Manchester United but with first-team opportunities limited at Old Trafford, Pique returned to Barcelona in 2008 and has racked up 266 appearances whilst winning four La Liga titles, two Champions League crowns and countless other trophies as a defensive lynchpin. With Spain he has also won the 2010 World Cup and European Championships in 2012, so he is no stranger to success. His experience will be key in the upcoming rebuild.

With new manager Luis Enrique arriving this summer, many believe a huge overhaul will take place at Barca as they aim to get back to winning ways after not lifting a single trophy in the 2013-14 season under former boss Gerardo Martino.

Our friends over Soccerly have all the details about Pique’s new deal, as the defender can now concentrate on playing well for Spain at the World Cup this summer (and hanging out with his popstar wife Shakira) before jetting back to Barcelona to help his team climb back to the top of Spanish and European soccer next season.

Gerard Piqué, who put pen to paper on his new five-year contract this morning, claimed that Barcelona have everything it takes to rise back to the summit of world football.

“Barcelona have to be at the top, winning trophies and making our presence felt among the elite of European and world football. We have the team and the coach, so we have all the ingredients to get back where we belong”, the defender stated.

Piqué also threw his weight behind the appointment of Luis Enrique as the club’s new coach: “I’m really excited. He showed that he has very clear ideas in his press conference. He knows the club very well and I think he’ll have a big impact”.

France has high expectations heading into EURO 2016, as the host nation is currently the bookies’ favorite to lift the trophy on July 10.

This team is overflowing with talent at every position and will cause nightmare matchup problems for the opposition, while also feeding off of their home crowd.

Eleven players from the Premier League have made the French side, from Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who leads the team as captain with 72 caps, to Leicester’s midfield workhorse N'Golo Kante, who has just three appearances for Les Bleus. Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin was a late inclusion as Lassana Diarra was forced to withdraw through injury just hours after being selected to the final squad.

Lyon’s 22-year-old defender Samuel Umtiti makes the side despite never being capped with the senior team, replacing the injured Jeremy Mathieu. Adil Rami also makes the cut in place of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, who is out with a thigh problem.

Final 23-man roster

Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Benoit Costil (Stade Rennais)

Defenders: Samuel Umtiti (Lyon), Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal), Eliaquim Mangala (Manchester City), Adil Rami (Sevilla), Patrice Evra (Juventus), Bacary Sagna (Manchester City), Lucas Digne (Roma), Christophe Jallet (Lyon)

Midfielders: Paul Pogba (Juventus), Blaise Matuidi (Paris Saint-Germain), Morgan Schneiderlin (Manchester United), N’Golo Kante (Leicester City), Yohan Cabaye (Crystal Palace), Moussa Sissoko (Newcastle United), Dimitri Payet (West Ham United)

Forwards: Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Anthony Martial (Manchester United), Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich), Olivier Giroud (Arsenal), Andre-Pierre Gignac (UANL Tigres)

Keylor Navas will not play for Costa Rica in the upcoming Copa America tournament while nursing an achilles injury.

Diagnosed with chronic Achilles tendinopathy, the Real Madrid goalkeeper has been bothered by discomfort throughout the season.

However, he did play the full 120 minutes in the Champions League final for last weekend, helping Real to a record 11th European title.

The loss is a big one for Costa Rica, whose three goalkeepers now on the squad have a combined 34 caps for the national team. Navas alone has 66.

Navas tied the Champions League record with nine clean sheets in the competition this season, and has quietly been one of the best keepers in the world over the past few seasons. His absence could be beneficial for the United States though, who will face Costa Rica in Group A play.

Spain has announced their final 23-man roster for EURO 2016, where Vicente del Bosque’s men will look to win an unprecedented third-straight European Championship.

The most notable exclusions from the side are that of Real Madrid’s Isco and Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez. Isco had previously seen regular playing time in the side leading up to the tournament, and the uncapped Saul misses out after a great campaign for Atleti.

Barcelona has five players in the side along with six Premier Leaguers, highlighted by the Chelsea trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, Pedro, and Cesc Fabregas.

With an overflow of talent in the defense and midfield, the biggest question for this Spain side will come up top. There are quality strikers in this team, but the inexperienced group has combined for just 19 caps and four goals at the senior level.

Final 23-man roster

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Porto), David De Gea (Manchester United), Sergio Rico (Sevilla)

Defenders: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Marc Bartra (Barcelona), Mikel San Jose (Athletic Bilbao), Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Hector Bellerin (Arsenal), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Bruno (Villarreal), Pedro (Chelsea), Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), David Silva (Manchester City)

Forwards: Nolito (Celta Vigo), Lucas Vasquez (Real Madrid), Aritz Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao), Alvaro Morata (Juventus)

Aurier was arrested in the early hours of Monday near the Champs-Elysees following an argument with police after a night out in Paris. Prosecutors said the police officer needed to take a day off work because of the incident.

Aurier was suspended for six weeks in February after a video emerged on social media showing him making derogatory comments about PSG coach Laurent Blanc, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and other players.

The Ivory Coast defender is widely regarded as one of the best right backs in Europe.
