Tragedy occurred on Wednesday, as a player in Chile died after suffering a heart attack on the pitch.
Carlos Barra, 23, was playing for Deportes Maipo Quilicura when he fell to the turf and experienced a cardiac arrest in the match against top-flight side Deportivo Palestino.
Medical staff at the game tried to revive Barra for over 20 minutes and were performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the pitch. Paramedics arrived soon after and tried to revive Barra for a further 40 minutes, but the young player died.
According to his teammates, Barra was on a one-month trial with third-tier club Quilicura and had recently graduated from university with a degree in physical education.
This tragedy brings back memories of Ecuadorian international Christian ‘Chuco’ Benitez passing away from a similar heart issue last year, plus the death of Marc-Vivien Foe during the 2003 Confederations Cup. Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba also suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a Premier League match back in 2012 but survived.
From everyone at ProSoccerTalk, our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Barra.
