Antonio Conte isn’t a man to rest on his laurels.
[ MORE: Costa wins it, again ]
You can see that from the way he runs up and down his technical area and bellows at his players during the game, and even though Chelsea sits comfortably atop the Premier League standings after an 11th-straight win on Saturday, he wants more.
Speaking to the media following Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace — which came courtesy of another Diego Costa goal, his 13th of the season — Conte is pleased for his players but believes there’s more in the tank despite matching a club record for most consecutive wins in the top-flight.
“The run is fantastic. Congratulations to my players, not me. I am pleased for them because they deserve this,” Conte said. “I see every single moment, every day. It is commitment, the way we prepare for the game and the way they fight. I am pleased for the fans who are fantastic home and away and who push us.
“We can improve though. You can always improve in different aspects. I am pleased with this level we have reached and with work we can improve. It is important to understand we are only at the 17th game in the season. There are two games before the half way. We are working very well and are in a good position. We must not look at he table and continue. We must not look at our rivals and continue work hard ourselves.”
Conte also hailed the “good balance between offence and defense” and praised goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for his key contributions in helping Chelsea to nine clean sheets in their last 11 PL games.
With games against Bournemouth, Stoke, Tottenham, Hull and Leicester coming up, you can easily see the Blues extending their winning run to set a new club record. The only thing that can stop them know is themselves and Conte bemoaned losing both Costa and N'Golo Kante for the Boxing Day clash against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, with the duo picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season and getting a one-game ban.
That said, Chelsea look so solid in defense and lethal up top that they’re almost unstoppable.
At this rate, it would be a huge shock for many if they don’t go on to win the Premier League title in Conte’s debut season in the Premier League.
