A pair of teams deadlocked in the middle of the table do battle in a local derby as Southampton travels just 30 miles west to take on Bournemouth at 8:30 a.m. ET live on NBCSN or live online at NBC Sports Live Extra.
These two teams spent 50 years without a match thanks to a gaping difference in relevance, but now they are neck-and-neck in the Premier League.
Southampton manager Claude Puel has stuck Jose Fonte, Dusan Tadic, and Shane Long all on the bench, bringing in Jay Rodriguez to lead the attack while Maya Yoshida deputizes in defense. With the glutton of holiday fixtures that Premier League teams face, it’s possible these players are simply being rotated during a time of heavy use.
Saints are also without Oriol Romeu due to suspension, the first game he has missed this season, so 21-year-old Harrison Reed comes into the side for just his second Premier League appearance of the season and first start.
For the Cherries, they have Callum Wilson who starts up front having been cleared of a concussion after a heavy blow on Tuesday against Leicester City. He replaces Benik Afobe in the only change from the midweek win over the Foxes. Ryan Frasier can only make the bench due to ankle difficulties.
