ProSoccerTalk Player of the Week: Chris Wondolowski

Is it time yet?

I mean, we certainly don’t want do the “J-I-N-X” thing at ProSoccerTalk.  No way.

Then again, that’s what we do. Talk about pro soccer, that is.

So … uh … well, here goes …

How many goal might Chris Wondolowski turn up this year? The man really is on stunning, record-setting pace.

Wonder Wondo hit for three more in a busy Round 9. He opened things last Wednesday with a pair, as the Earthquakes served attacking notice by pushing five past the Eastern Conference leaders D.C. United. Those were Nos. 9 and 10 for the year.

On Saturday, Vancouver’s defense forgot, apparently, who is leading Major League Soccer on this record-setting pace, leaving the Earthquakes’ main man alone at the far post to slam home No. 11.

So here we are, at No. 11 through 10 matches. That leaves 24 contests, and Wondolowski would need to fall way off form to avoid setting some marks.

I’d wager a vintage San Jose Clash t-shirt that Wondolowski will be the league’s first 20-goal scorer since Landon Donovan in 2008. If he goes anywhere north of there, the Earthquake’s marksman will guarantee himself no worse than seventh in terms of all-time best goal-scoring seasons in MLS.

Past that … well, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves here.

This much we do know, with 100 percent certainty: Wonder Wondo has done enough to claim ProSoccerTalk’s Player of the Week award for Round 9.
