Talking BBVA Compass and previous stadium openings

Expect to see plenty of words and pictures in the coming week about the opening of BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. As I’ve said before, revenue stream attached to facilities are critical for MLS and they give clubs a vital community permanence that simply doesn’t exist when they are reduced to tenant status.

Besides all that, new stadiums are just cool.

For all those reasons, Saturday’s opening match is a grand occasion.

And what do you know about this? Major League Soccer and the Dynamo got lucky because Saturday’s opponent happens to be about the hottest team in Major League Soccer. (Hottest this side of San Jose, anyway.)

I think you call that a “bonus,”  baby.

And since D.C. United is involved (and because the man knows what’s important), Washington Post ace Steven Goff is on the case.

He put together this smart list of previous stadium openings in Major League Soccer.

You’ll notice that not all teams handled scheduling the way the Dynamo did this year, front-loading the season with road games pending facility completion. In many cases, teams played elsewhere until the grand opening, even if it meant splitting the home games in a given year.

But all in all, Dominic Kinnear’s side handled things well, with a 2-2-2 mark heading into Wednesday’s road-stretch finale at New York. Eight points from a possible 18 on the road isn’t bad by any means.
