Torsten Frings injury + Eric Avila’s hammer blow of a quote = very hard times for Toronto FC

Here’s what Toronto FC midfielder had to say about his team’s latest defeat in a growing, embarrassing string of them:

“It really does feel like a nightmare,” said midfielder Eric Avila. “It’s really hard. … After the game you just want to go and cry and hide.”

So here’s the deal: When a telling, hammer blow of a quote like that is not the worst thing that happens to a club on a given day, you know things have fallen into a spectacularly bad place.

We should know more today about Torsten Frings’ shoulder injury, the one that forced him out of Saturday’s match, a 2-0 loss to D.C. United. Frings’ ongoing, reliable performance (when healthy) is one of the precious few things going right around BMO this year.

So if the TFC captain is out for any substantial length of time, then Aron Winter’s chances of getting his club pointed in the right direction, super-model thin as they are, disintegrate that much further.
