An American women’s soccer player gave Borussia Dortmund fans quite a fright on Monday.
‘Bayern Munich acquire Lewandowski’ read the headline on RevierSport’s website; a sports newspaper that serves the North Rhine-Westphalia and Ruhr regions of Germany. Mass shock and confusion ensued amongst fans of the Ruhr-based club.
Borussia Dortmund supporters were terrified that league nemeses Bayern Munich had secured the services of star striker Robert Lewandowski. The supposed news came two days after the reigning Bundesliga champions humbled the Bavarians in the DFB-Pokal final.
It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. Sort of. A certain Lewandowski is indeed headed to Bayern Munich but she is neither Polish nor a ‘he’.
The story was in reference to Gina Lewandowski’s move to Bayern Munich next season. The American center back spent five years with FFC Frankfurt and recently earned her first call-up to USWNT training camp. In an odd twist of fate, Bayern Munich shamed Frankfurt in the Women’s DFB-Pokal final on Saturday.
For the record, the two might share a surname, but are not related.
RevierSport’s women’s soccer page saw a huge surge in traffic as a result of the startling news piece.
Borussia Dortmund fans’ relief might not last for long, however, as Lewandowski (Robert, that is) is now being linked with Manchester United.
