It’s really very nice that David Beckham will be involved in the ceremonial Olympic torch toting. But let’s have a look at the man’s schedule, shall we:
Thursday he flies to Athens to claim the world’s most celebrated ball of fire.
Friday he flies the torch to the UK, where it will be walked and ran around the British Isles ahead of this summer’s games.
Saturday, back on a plane and back to the States.
All well and nice but, uh … where does the L.A. Galaxy fit in all this? You know, the club that pays Beckham so handsomely?
Because the Galaxy does, after all, have a little game to play on Saturday. In fact, it’s a big one, among Major League Soccer’s top rivalries. Besides, given the Galaxy’s wobbly state in 2012, they’re all pretty big.
Club officials say Beckham will be available for selection – but can a 37-year-old really be at his best considering that schedule? And didn’t Bruce Arena cite “travel” among the reasons Beckham was recently rested on the team’s visit to Seattle?
The real question surrounding Beckham today, of course, has nothing to do with any of this. The far more important question is this:
What inspired the Galaxy man to go all “V for Vendetta” on us?
