Jurgen Klinsmann is seriously throwing it down. Are the players and the principals picking it up?
Klinsmann says its tournament title or bust! Anything else will be a rotting heap of smelly disappointment.
Of course, he’s not talking about his team, but rather his former team, Germany.
ESPNFC’s Jeff Carlisle writes today that Germany is in danger of becoming a perennial bridesmaid at major tournaments. It sounds a little harsh to me, but Carlisle does make the case that it’s been 16 years since Germany’s last drink from the Big Gulp of major tourney success.
Either way, Klinsmann says it’s time for his former team – Klismann directed the Mannschaft to a third-place finish at World Cup 2006 – to fight its way to the next level, the ultimate level. From Carlisle’s piece:
It’s down to them. Do they settle for second or third spot? Or do you become even more nasty and say they’re going to beat the crap out of them? That’s actually what I expect them to do. Jogi knows that better than I do, because he has them 24/7. They have to step it up now, because the nation is demanding it. It’s as simple as that. Anything but the title will be a disappointment.”
