Terrence Boyd: move to Rapid Vienna quite likely

TAMPA, Fla. – I just spoke to Terrence Boyd, the German-American striker who bound himself to the United States by appearing in Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

Boyd told me his move from Borussia Dortmund to Austria’s Rapid Vienna isn’t final, but that it is looking very good.

“I’m quite positive about it,” he said, meaning that he was looking forward to the move.

Boyd, a quite affable sort, told me he has enjoyed his time in the Borussia Dortmund reserves and feels fortunate to have been part of a such a successful club. (Dortmund just won its second consecutive German Bundesliga championship.)

“But I am really looking forward to playing first-team football,” he said. “It is better than playing on the second team, I guess. I hope to find out.”

Boyd will accompany his American teammates as they travel tomorrow into Guatemala. He will return to Germany on June 13 or 14, get a couple of things done there and then report to Rapid’s preseason training, assuming everything gets signed and sealed. So there’s no time off for the young striker.

He joked about his “vacation” being his time with the United States in the late-May, early June period.

“It was too big an opportunity to miss,” he said.
