Here’s to the Irish fans. Well done, ye in emerald green. What a beautifully impassioned display this was from Ireland supporters Thursday inside the Poznan, Poland ground.
Their team was behind. Four goals worth of “behind” in fact – and that’s a lot of “behind” to absorb, especially when it means the Republic of Ireland is being officially eliminated from this tournament.
They’ve traveled hundreds of miles only to see their boys arrive flat in the opener against Croatia, and then be utterly flattened against the regal likes of Spain.
So do the sit on their hands and sulk? Leave early? Not a chance.
For the final 10 minutes, the loyal fans of the Emerald Isle belted out “The Fields of Athenry” an Irish folk ballad, hands and flags aloft, fiercely proud of their team and land, never mind having so little to celebrate during the tournament.
It really was stirring and inspiring stuff; even the world’s most hopeless cynic has to be moved by such pride.
Take a look and a listen. Turn it up a little – and don’t be afraid to tell people tonight or tomorrow at the office that you’ve got a little Irish in you, whether it’s true or not.
