Please repeat after me: Nothing good comes from getting into a heated confrontation with police. Nothing.
The latest evidence comes from Toronto FC: The Toronto Sun has reported that three Toronto FC players have been arrested in Houston.
The club had arrived into Texas on Sunday ahead of a mid-week MLS contest at the Dynamo’s new downtown ground.
According to the Sun report, Toronto players Miguel Aceval, Nick Soolsma and Luis Silva were jailed overnight for public intoxication. Clearly, this is what new manager Paul Mariner wanted to deal with, just one game into his tenure as boss of BMO.
A Houston police spokesman told the Sun: “There was a large disturbance outside the club. Our officers tried to disperse the fight at which time they refused to leave and then began to have verbal altercations with the officers.”
See, what could possibly go wrong?
I’m sure there is more to this part of the story, but one unfortunate detail has emerged: that one of the players ran from police – but couldn’t get away. So, yes, the Twitter world is aflutter with funnies about a professional athlete not being able to run away from police.
