No shortage of Chelsea fans at MLS All-Star game

PHILADELPHIA – Anyone who can’t find a Chelsea fan in the house tonight at PPL Park isn’t looking very hard.

There they all are, resplendent in their blue Chelsea shirts. And I doubt too many of them made it over from London.

It’s an odd thing, really. I mean, Major League Soccer is the “home team,” such as it is. And yet, lots of the fans here paid their money not to see David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Thierry Henry, Kyle Beckerman, and the other merry men of MLS. Rather, they are here to see their Blues.

It’s a microcosm of what MLS faces each and every day; there really is no shortage of soccer fans in the country, no matter what some of the old media dinosaurs and some of the lesser informed creatures in our land try to tell you.

But … If we’re talking about MLS fans then, yes, they are surely in shorter supply. Desperately short supply in some markets, where so many soccer supporters love them some EPL or Mexican league or Bundesliga or whatever – but they couldn’t spell MLS if you spotted them the M and the L.

That’s not a problem here in Philadelphia, where the club gets sensational support, never mind that the ground is fairly far outside of town.

Still, here’s the American soccer condition; lots of fans, with their club support spread literally across the world.
