Highlights: Chicago’s Austin Berry makes Rookie of Year case

Vancouver’s Darren Mattocks may have assumed the inside track on Rookie of the Year, but this thing is far from a cinch.

A certain Chicago Fire center back could still have something to say about the race.

Austin Berry was a name that very few of us were talking about just a few weeks ago. He didn’t benefit from that early season push the way D.C. United’s Nick DeLeon and some others did. (DeLeon is back in the picture, too, after his bright performance last night.)

But Berry has made the most of his opportunity since Cory Gibbs’ season-ending injury, establishing his rookie self as a steady part of a central back line partnership alongside former German international Arne Friedrich.

Last night, Chicago’s back line limited Toronto to just eight shots total in a 2-1 win. The visitors’ only goal came after Marco Pappa’s poor pass was intercepted inside his own half.

But Pappa made amends with a goal. And then Berry came forward for the game-winner.
