You didn’t really think Landon Donovan, now a learned man of 30, had gone into a period of decline, did you?
All this talk of the Galaxy man’s waning interest may have led some to wander down that path. But did you see his peachy work in Sunday’s big 4-0 win over former rival Chivas USA?
(OK, I know they are still rivals. But just barely. I mean, c’mon! How long can we keep saying that? This thing has got to get more balanced, or I’ll make a ProSoccerTalk decree that we can no longer call it a SuperClasico – I’ve already got readers on my back for that one.)
Back to Donovan and his four-assist night. His ability to run at defenders and desire to burst with all that pace into open spaces drove the Galaxy, along with Marcelo Sarvas’ game-changing work in midfield. Donovan’s foursome of assists puts him in the league lead this year with 11.
As for the rest of the highlights, I’ll let U.S. international Sacha Kljestan say it (via Twitter): “Just watched the highlights so I am not sure but Chivas lost 4-0 and it still looked like Dan Kennedy was their best player. GK of the Year.”
Yup. Kennedy did what Kennedy does, keeping his team in the game longer than the Goats probably should have been.
(Question on the side: Can I make Kennedy our goalkeeper on MLS Team of the Week when he let four get past him? It’s a toughie.)
While you ponder, watch the highlights, 9-plus minutes of Galaxy greatness and Chivas woe:
