Donovan and Mexico: still looking to hook up?

Landon Donovan has done so doggone much in his career at this point, I forgot all about his previous flirtation with playing in Liga MX.

It didn’t have the fancy name then; we just said he was “thinking about playing in Mexico.” At Club America, specifically. Back in 2009, looking to shake up the career Etch A Sketch, his desire for some soccer strange came down to a choice between Everton or Club America in Mexico City. What he said at the time:

“The decision for me to have an opportunity to go to Everton, with Tim [Howard] there, to play in the Premier League, that made the most sense,” he told Goal.com.

But he assured everyone that the opportunity to play south of the border was quite real, and so was his thoughtful consideration of the move – never mind some mutual enmity along the way between Donovan and the entire country of Mexico. (That relationship is like that guy and girl in your group who snipe and sneer at each other a lot – but you just know they are dying to hook up.)

Today, the U.S. national team’s all-time leading scorer says he would still consider playing in Mexico.

This is all coming up, of course, because Donovan is down in Mexico City (ironically, home of Club America in addition to being the national stadium), where the United States meets a motivated and turbo-charged version of El Tri. (And good luck with all that, boys. We’ll get the ice packs and reassuring words ready back here.)

What Donovan said Tuesday:

I don’t know what the future will hold. But there was a time, when I went to Everton last, I considered it. And I would if it was genuine.”

“This is a very good league. It’s a very difficult league to play in. It’s very difficult especially as an American to get minutes on a team. So to have guys consistently contributing is very helpful.”
