For one night, all is swell with the Colorado Rapids

Is there a way back into the playoff chase for the Colorado Rapids?

There may be – but I sure don’t see one.  And I’ve looked.

Even if Vancouver’s August of angst turns into a September swoon and the Whitecaps’ spiral devolves into a complete, heinous collapse, the Rapids still might have trouble fighting back into the post-season.

That’s because even in the Canadian collapse scenario, Oscar Pareja’s team would still need to make up eight points over six matches, no small order. They would also need to scoop up enough points to lap Dallas and hold off Chivas USA to avoid being shut out of the playoffs for the first time since 2009. (Given the Goats’ own collapse of late, that one seems plausible, at least.)

Still, let’s call this one a long shot, somewhere along the lines of FOX resurrecting the cartoon version of Napoleon Dynamite – which was an pretty awful idea the first time around.

Still, Colorado had joy on a Wednesday in September. The Rapids ran roughshod over defenseless Portland, finishing on the better side of a 3-0 beat down.

Drew Moor was in charge along Colorado’s back line. Tony Cascio may have something to say about the Rookie of the Year race yet. And Andre Akpan got the big night going early with a sixth minute goal.

Here’s what Akpan had to say about his and the Rapids’ performance following Wednsday’s win outside Denver.
