When it comes to injuries and the Galaxy, we’re all just guessing, because manager Bruce Arena just does not want to be any more forthcoming than he’s required to by the league. So, vagueness and gamesmanship typically ensue.
This is a big one, too. It’s Landon Donovan, who suffered a bone bruise in his knee (And more possibly? Who knows?) two weeks ago in a loss to Real Salt Lake.
We do know that Donovan has ruled himself out for Saturday’s clash with San Jose. What he told reporters following Friday’s practice:
Getting better. Progressing. It’s a slow process, but I have a goal of being ready by the playoffs, whenever that might start, so that’s where we’re going to go.”
The playoffs could start for the Galaxy in less than two weeks.
So, when assessing Donovan’s status, let’s just do this (remembering that we’re guessing, because we have to.)
- Will he play tonight against San Jose?: Unlikely, but it’s the Galaxy, so anything is possible.
- Will he play next week in the Galaxy season finale?: There’s a reasonable chance that game will mean nothing, that the Galaxy will remain locked into its current spot, fourth place. So, perhaps, but not likely.
- Will the Galaxy attacker and all-time national team leading scorer be healed up for the playoffs?: If this is nothing more than what’s being talked about now, quite possibly. But since there is also a PCL tear in his knee that might require post-season surgery, it’s hardly a slam dunk.
