Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Seattle cannot score.
Stop us if you’ve heard this before: New England cannot score.
And stop us if you’ve heard this one before – although this little bit of negative narrative is far more recent: veteran MLS manager Sigi Schmid may be in trouble.
Truly, the Sounders may soon need some new ideas. That’s not to say “new ideas” in the form of a new manager – not just yet. But something has to shake loose soon, because the Sounders are in a very bad way right now.
Probably not the best time for Schmid to be guaranteeing victories, as he did.
Because his team is dead last in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference with a meager two points from five matches, including three at home. (One of those matches at CenturyLink Field was against bitter rival Portland – and you just know that’s a double-word score when fans and media begin tallying up the demerits.)
Saturday’s scoreless draw with New England at CenturyLink comes just days after getting bounced from CONCACAF Champions League action – a lesser indiscretion considering MLS teams routinely get bounced from CCL by Mexican sides. Still, stacked on top of one another, the pile-up of Sounders woe gets increasingly hard for the Emerald City supporters to stomach.
It should be noted that starting striker Eddie Johnson and Obafemi Martins are both hurt. Still …
(Favorite snarky comment while perusing the game thread at Sounder at Heart: “So we just need about 42 minutes of stoppage time [to score].” Hee-hee.)
The latest clunker from Seattle is obviously a better result for New England, whose midfield was no match for the Shalrie Joseph-Osvaldo Alonso combo that Schmid rolled out on a sunny Seattle afternoon. New England didn’t get a shot on target while a few opportunities did come and go for the home side, most with Steve Zakuani’s foot prints on them.
Revs manager Jay Heaps will take the point and begin looking ahead to another tough road test in seven days, at New York.
