There has been plenty of interest in USMNT forward Herculez Gomez for quite some time now.
Teams North and South of the Mexican border are weighing up a move for the Santos Laguna star, who according to reports, has just one-year left on his contract at the Liga MX side.
According to local newspaper, El Siglo de Torreón, negotiations between Santos and Gomez aren’t going well, with a move to MLS or Xolos the most likely destination for the Mexican-American forward.
While other reports from Fox Sports commentator Gustavo Mendoza have Gomez extremely close to a move to Tijuana.
What do we think about this one guys?
Personally I would love to see Herc back in Major League Soccer to prove to any doubters just how good he is.
But it seems as if the lure of Liga MX, and the fact that his MLS rights are still help by Sporting KC, would suggest a stay in Mexico is more likely.
I like him because you know exactly what you’re going to get with Gomez. He works his tail off, runs the channels and is a composed finisher when he gets the chance.
Rumors of him joining the Seattle Sounders have circled in the past, could Sigi Schmid swoop in to snap up Gomez from Santos?
Not right now. The Sounders are probably focusing on defensive reinforcements and are extremely deep in the attacking areas.
That said, with Gomez away on USMNT duty this week maybe a few MLSers will get chatting to the former LA, Colorado Rapids and KC Wizards forward. A sneaky word here and there from Brad David, Eddie Johnson or Omar Gonzalez perhaps? Which team would Gomez be a good fit for?
You never know. But with the wages Gomez is earning for Santos, he will almost certainly be looking for a DP deal in MLS. Not many sides can offer that right now.
This thing will play out over the next few weeks… Stay tuned. Herculez could be coming home.
