Just when everything seemed rosy for Arsene Wenger, he may have to convince one of his best defenders to stay on at the English Premier League club.
Frenchman Laurent Koscielny has expressed his displeasure at not winning a trophy with Arsenal and admitted he may have to move on to try and fulfill his dream of winning more silverware.
Koscielny, 27, excelled last season as Arsenal qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the EPL season. But the French international defender has been rumored to be the subject of a $23 million bid from Bayern Munich and it’s thought he could be tempted if regular trophies are on offer.
“I want to have some titles,” Koscielny told Eurosport. “I hope the club will give itself the means. If that’s not the case, I’ll go take a look elsewhere.”
In the interview Koscielny also stated that he was happy at the Emirates, but he wasn’t content to simply challenge for a top-four position each season. The former Lorient star joined Arsenal in the summer of 2010 for $12 million after impressing in Ligue 1, which was his first season in the top flight.
His dramatic rise from sub in France’s third-tier to Arsenal’s main defender and French international has been a sensational one. Last season he scored 4 times in 34 appearances with his aerial prowess key for Arsenal at both ends of the pitch.
For most international players, wanting to win titles is a pretty fair statement. But given the exodus of at least one pivotal player every off season form the Emirates, Arsenal fans are rightly worried about Koscielny’s comments and fear he may soon be leaving North London in search of glory.
The Gunners have not won a trophy since 2005 and haven’t really come close in recent seasons. Next year is a big year for Wenger. His sides strong comeback in the second half of last season steadied the ship, but they will need to carry that over to the start of next season and come out flying to try and win the EPL crown.
Arsenal’s fans, and now their players it seems, expect nothing else than a challenge for every trophy on offer.
