Monaco to begin Ligue 1 return with 2-point deduction

Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev has spent plenty of money this summer looking to boost his newly-promoted French side to an immediate title contender.

Unfortunately, the club has a bit of a hurdle to overcome as the new season kicks off.

The French governing body the LFP has handed down a 3-point deduction to AS Monaco for poor fan behavior in a match last season against Le Mans, with one point suspended.

The LFP release said the deduction is for the “use of pyrotechnics, invasion of the pitch at the end of the match, and brutality towards the referee by a spectator who invaded the pitch.”

The punishment also requires Monaco to hold one match next season behind closed doors with no fans allowed in.

The suspended point means the club will start with a 2-point deduction and if the club has a repeat offense, the third point will be deducted in addition to any additional punishment.
