18-year-old Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling will now be scheduled to go on trial in September after allegedly assaulting his 19-year-old girlfriend, model Shana Halliday.

Sterling was arrested around 10:30 pm Thursday night following an incident in Merseyside, and spent the night in a local police station.

Liverpool declined to comment except to say Sterling denies the charges.  He entered a not guilty plea.

Despite the incident, Sterling was included in the most recent England squad after manager Roy Hodgson decided Sterling has the right attitude to play for his country.  Hodgson went with Sterling as well as fellow youngster Wilfred Zaha, describing the pair on Thursday as “two very exciting young talents” and saying “I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a mark with the senior team.”

Halliday is the reigning England’s Top Model of the World pageant – more commonly known as “Miss United Kingdom” – and competed in the global final of the competition in Egypt back in March.

According to the Daily Mail, the incident occurred after the couple celebrated Halliday’s 20th birthday early with a dinner out.  Sterling tweeted the following just an hour before the recorded time of the incident:

The charge of “common assault” is punishable by fine and up to six months in prison if he’s convicted.

Sterling has since made the trip to Dublin and met his Liverpool teammates there ahead of their friendly with Celtic on Saturday.  He will then join the England squad for their match against Scotland on Tuesday.
