It’s over, finally, and here’s the carnage – today’s transfers from Europe’s top five leagues. Good luck, and see you in January:
ENGLAND
Arsenal – Özil. Arsenal bought Mesut Özil, shattering their transfer record to do so. They also secured a loan deal for Palermo’s Emiliano Viviano, who will compete for playing time in goal.
Aston Villa – Libor Kozák, a 24-year-old forward from the Czech Republic, makes his way from Lazio to Villa Park. The $7.8 million move sees the international arrive on a four-year deal.
Cardiff City – Peter Odemwingie has finally found a new home. Having never regained West Brom’s trust after showing up on QPR’s doorstep last January, the Nigerian international moves to Wales for $3.9 million.
Chelsea – In addition to loaning out Romelu Lukaku, the club sent defender Sam Hutchinson to the Eredivisie, where he will spend the year on loan at Vitesse. From late Sunday: Former Porto speedster Christian Atsu was purchased from Porto and immediately joined Hutchinson on loan at Vitesse.
Crystal Palace – One day after taking on Jimmy Kebe from Reading, the Eagles have added 26-year-old Aaron Mariappa from the Royals. Palace also added Scottish creator Barry Bannan from Aston Villa and 22-year-old defender Jack Hunt from Huddersfield Town. Peter Ramage moves from the Eagles to Barnsley on a one-year loan.
Everton – Former Wigan midfielder and Irish international James McCarthy rejoins his former coach, moving from the Latics. Everton gives up $20 million to get him. The Toffees also added Gareth Barryand Romelu Lukaku, snagging them on one-year loans. Francisco Júnior, a 21-year-old midfielder, goes on loan to Vitesse of the Eredivisie.
Fulham – Elsad Zverotic, a 26-year-old Montenegrin defender/defensive midfielder, joins the Cottagers from Switzerland’s Young Boys. He’s made over 30 appearances for this national team. The club also loaned prospect Cauley Woodrow to Southend United and 20-year-old forward Marcello Trotta to Brentford.
Hull City – 20-year-old defender Conor Townsend will spend the season at Carlisle United, sent out on a year-long loan.
Liverpool – In what may be one of the most significant deals of the window’s last day, Liverpool added Paris Saint-Germain’s Mamadou Sakho, somebody with the talent to slot right in to Brendan Rodgers’ back line. The reported price was $20 million. Tiago Ilori cost slightly less from Sporting Lisbon, the 20-year-old defender moving to Anfield for $10.9 million. Victor Moses, not a part of José Mourinho’s plans at Chelsea, arrives on loan, while Daniel Pacheco was loaned to Alcorcon.
Manchester City – Abdul Razak got some time last year under Roberto Mancini. This year, that time will have to come in Dagestan, with the 20-year-old midfielder loaned out to the Russian Premier League side. Harry Bunn, a 20-year-old forward, will spend the season at Sheffield United.
Manchester United – Marouane Fellaini’s deal got done. The Everton midfielder joins for a reported $42.5 million. The Red Devils also found a home for Bebé, with Paços de Ferreira taking on the Portuguese for the season. Nick Powell, one year after being purchased by the club, goes out on loan to Wigan. Fabio Coentrao’s move, however, does not appear to have gone through.
Norwich City – Jacob Butterfield, a 23-year-old defender who was not in Chris Hughton’s plans, takes a step down, landing at Middlesborough of the English Championship.
Stoke City – In one of the more curious signings of the day, the Potters added Austrian enigma Marko Arnautovic, paying $3.1 million for the 24-year-old attacker who has also had spells at Twente and Inter Milan. He moves to the Britannia from Werder Bremen, joining Stephen Ireland, who played for Mark Hughes at Manchester City. The Potters lost Ryan Shotton, however, allowing the young defender to leave for Wigan Athletic, with Michael Knightly also departing on a loan to Burnley.
Swansea City – Swans turned to one of Michael Laudrup’s old stomping grounds, Getafe, to take Álvaro Vásquez, a 22-year-old striker, on loan.
Sunderland – Andrea Dossena is back in the Premier League after the man who brought him in for his failed spell at Liverpool, Rafa Benítez, sold him to the Black Cats. Whether Dossena’s ready to play a conventional left back, let alone in the Premier League, will be tested. Manager Paolo Di Canio also brought in FabioBorini, another Italian, who moves on a season-long loan from Liverpool.
Tottenham – Fans will be sorry to see Benoit Assou-Ekotto go, the Cameroonian sent on loan to Queens Park Rangers for the season. Thomas Carroll will join Assou-Ekotto at Loftus Road.
West Bromwich Albion – Now Steve Clarke can throw numbers at the problem. The Baggies didn’t add a center forward upgrade, but they did get Victor Anichebe from Everton, giving West Brom another attacking option. Stephane Sessegnon also arrives, the Malian international moving from Sunderland. The Baggies also added 29-year-old goakeeper Lee Camp on a free from Norwich as well as Morgan Amalfitano, a surprise loan acquisition from Marseille.
SPAIN
Atlético Madrid – Toby Alderweireld had been linked to a number of Premier League clubs, yet the former Ajax defender ends up at the Vicente Calderon, with the fee undisclosed.
Getafe – After being bought from Arsenal de Sarandi last month, Benfica has loaned 24-year-old Argentine Lisandro López to the Madrid-based club. López has appeared four times for his country.
Sevilla – Talented Russian international Denis Cheryshev will get his first prolonged taste of senior-level competition with the Rojiblancos, the young attacker set to spend the season on loan from Real Madrid.
GERMANY
Eintracht Frankfurt – Attacking midifelder Tranquillo Barnetta, squeezed out at Schalke, will spent the campaign at Eintracht, the clubs having agreed to a year-long loan.
Hamburg – Part of a virtual loan swap between the teams, HSV get 21-year-old striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga. The Bayer 04 youth product has yet to appear at the senior level.
Hertha Berlin – Norwegian midfielder Per Skjelbred, who moved to Hamburg from Rosenborg in 2011, will spend the year in Berlin, on loan from HSV. Hertha also secured a loan deal for Tolga Cigerci, Woflsburg’s 21-year-old midfielder.
Nürnberg – Makoto Hasebe, a Japanese international who’d been out of favor at Wolfsburg, found a new home on deadline day, the defensive midfielder set to replace Serdar Tasci on a two-year deal.
Stuttgart – 19-year-old Bosnian striker Mark Maletic moves to the Dutch second division, Stuttgart having loaned the prospect to FC Oss.
Werder Bremen – 20-year-old defender Florian Hartherz has been sold to SC Paderborn, currently sitting near the bottom of the Germany second division. He’ll be joined there by Johannes Wurtz, the 21-year-old forward sent to Paderborn on loan.
ITALY
Catania – It will be strange to see Jaroslav Plasil in something other than a Bordeaux kit, but the Czech midfielder moves to the Serie A on loan.
Hella Verona – Young forward Juan Manuel Iturbe joins the newly-promoted side on a one-year loan from FC Porto, the Argentine attacker having been loaned to River Plate earlier this year.
Parma – Joel Obi needs playing time, which he was unlikely to get at Inter Milan. He’ll spend the season on loan at Parma.
Sampdoria – Midfielder Birkir Bjarnson moves to Sampdoria, the 25-year-old Icelandic international having spent last season at Pescara, who’d just recently secured his full rights from Belgium’s Standard Liege. Samp also took 18-year-old Andrea Petagna on loan from Milan.
FRANCE
Bastia – One day after getting Milos Krasic on loan, Bastia have added Ryad Boudebouz from Sochaux, the Algerian winger another injection of talent for the Corsican club.
Marseille – OM finally completed the much-discussed purchase of Florian Thauvin, signing the young attacker to a five-year deal after the 20-year-old had held out from Lille to force a deal. The reported fee is $19.8 million.
Monaco – Another victim of Monaco’s buildup, Greek international Giorgios Tzavellas moves back to his home country, completing a move to Europa League-bound POAK, who finished runners-up to Olympiakos last season.
Nantes – The French side agreed to take 28-year-old midfielder Banel Nicolita on loan from St. Etienne. The right-sider spend six seasons at Steaua Bucharest.
Rennes – Silvio Romero, a 25-year-old Argentine attacker, moves to France, ending his three-plus seasons with Lanús. Over his 105 Primera Division games, Romero scored 28 goals.
Sochaux – Thomas Guerbert, a 24-year-old midfielder from Meaux, moves to this third club in four years, leaving Dijon. The club also takes on 22-year-old Emmanuel Mayuka on loan from Southampton.
Toulouse – 23-year-old Swiss defender François Moubandje makes the step up from Servette FC , the Swiss club having been relegated from the country’s first division.
Valenciennes – Another club benefitting from Monaco’s overstock, Valenciennes will have 25-year-old defender Gary Kagelmacher for the year on loan.

Arsenal rising star Folarin Balogun held talks with U.S. Soccer last week and now he is set to discuss his international future with England.
Balogun visited Orlando, Florida during the March international break and the USMNT eligible striker being interested in committing his international future to the USA caused quite the stir.
The England U21 forward missed their March camp due to a small injury and he then posted a photo on social media which showed he was near to the USMNT’s training camp in Florida and he has was around Orlando for the USMNT’s 1-0 win against El Salvador there.
Now, England U21 boss Lee Carsley has revealed that the Three Lions setup will hold talks with Balogun about his future next week, as they will travel to Reims in France where he is currently on loan from Arsenal.
“He’s going to have to make a decision, so all we can do is tell him how much we rate him. The rest is down to him,” Carsley said via the London Evening Standard. Balogun has scored seven goals in 13 U21 games for England.
However, USMNT interim head coach Anthony Hudson last week confirmed that Balogun and U.S. Soccer had held talks over his future.
“We’ve had a dialogue. He is out here [in Orlando] having a bit of a break and training. We’ve had some discussions. It’s now just about him enjoying the rest of his trip… It has been an opportunity for us to share about our program, and that’s it. I hope we speak again,” Hudson said.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Balogun is a man in demand as England, the USMNT and Nigeria all push for him to represent them as he continues to assess his options.
Balogun, 21, has scored 17 goals in France’s top-flight for Reims this season as his loan spell from Arsenal has gone incredibly well and only Jonathan David and Kylian Mbappe have scored more goals than him in Ligue 1 so far in 2022-23.
Internationally he is eligible to play for the USA, England and Nigeria and he has represented England’s youth teams in recent years and has previously played for the USA at U18 level.
Balogun was expected to play for the Three Lions during this international break as he is England’s main goalscoring threat at U21 level and Carsley wants him to represent them this summer at the U21 European Championships.
The talented striker used an unexpected window of opportunity to fly to Orlando to meet with U.S. Soccer reps to discuss his potential future with the USMNT. So, will he switch his international allegiance?
Arsenal teammate and USMNT’s starting goalkeeper Matt Turner had this to say when asked about Balogun.
“Yeah, he’d be a great addition to our national team. I think he’s done really well, obviously, for his club on loan, and we’ll see. The decision has to come from the heart, because it’s not necessarily an easy task always, to come and play in these CONCACAF games, and it’s a tough region at times. So for us, we’d be really grateful to have him, but his heart needs to be in it,” Turner said.
🗣 "He's been an integral part of our campaign."

Balogun has spoken about this topic before as Pro Soccer Talk asked him about his international future in an interview at the start of last season.
We asked Balogun if other Arsenal academy graduates like Yunus Musah and Bukayo Saka being in similar situations has led to them discussing how they made their decision on which country to represent and if that would help him to decide who he plays for internationally.
“I haven’t spoken to any of them about the nationality situation,” Balogun said. “Even from just the way I’ve known them, it is not something they have put a lot of pressure on themselves about. I think it is a decision that comes naturally to them.
“I think I’m going to do the same and hopefully something will just come to me and then I will make a decision… I don’t want to put too much pressure on the situation. It is just something that will just come to me.”
Maybe that feeling came to him while he was in the Orlando area with the USMNT.
Pep Guardiola’s Man City can momentarily cut the gap to leaders Arsenal to five points but there are question marks swirling around the fitness of goalscoring machine Erling Haaland heading into this game. City are looking for a three-peat of Premier League titles and five in the last six seasons, but Arsenal don’t look like they’re going to slip up anytime soon. So City can’t afford to either. They’ve won six in a row in all competitions, scoring 23 and conceding once in that run. We all know they love to kick on at this point of the campaign, so let’s see if they can do it again.
As for Liverpool, well, it has been one step forward and one step back pretty much all season long for Jurgen Klopp’s side. After their 7-0 shellacking of Manchester United, they then lost at Bournemouth to infuriate Klopp and their fans further. The front three of Salah, Nunez and Gakpo are all clicking through the gears nicely but Liverpool have to become more consistent and dominant games in midfield if they’re going to close the gap to the current top four. They’ve had success against City in recent years as their contrasting style of play match up well but this seems like a different, more fragile, Liverpool this season.
How to watch Manchester City vs Liverpool live, stream link and start time
Kick off: 7:30am ET, Saturday TV Channel: Peacock Online: Stream via Peacock Premium
Key storylines & in-form players to watch
The fitness of Haaland is obviously a huge concern for City as he suffered a groin issue and did not play for Norway over the international break and returned to Manchester for treatment. If he isn’t fit to start then expect Julian Alvarez to come in. Elsewhere, City are flying with Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gunodgan having a big role to play with Phil Foden out following his Appendectomy. As always, Kevin de Bruyne is the main man and will relish this chance to cut Arsenal’s lead atop the table.
Liverpool just can’t find consistency right now. They have improved defensively but they are a real Jekyll and Hyde team. Jurgen Klopp isn’t a fan of that and showed his frustration after their defeat at Bournemouth, which was their last Premier League game and was way back on March 11. He’s had a few weeks to stew over that loss and it will be intriguing to see what plan he has come up with. For this game as earlier this season Liverpool beat Man City 1-0 at Anfield by playing a front four which pinned City in.
Manchester City team news, injuries, lineup options
QUESTIONABLE: Erling Haaland (groin) | OUT: Phil Foden (appendix removed)
Liverpool team news, injuries, lineup options
OUT: Calvin Ramsay (knee), Stefan Bajcetic (groin) | QUESTIONABLE: Luis Diaz (knee), Darwin Nunez (ankle), Kostas Tsimikas (rib), Thiago Alcantara (hip), Joe Gomez (undisclosed)
He has scored 42 (yes, forty two) goals in all competitions for Man City this season.
However, Pep Guardiola and Man City now face an anxious wait as an injury to Erling Haaland is the last thing they wanted before a pivotal final few months of the season as they chase the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble.
Norway’s team doctor, Ola Sand, gave an update on Haaland’s injury.
“We hoped that this was just a familiarity that would carry over to Saturday, but after doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it to the games against Spain and Georgia,” Sand said. “It is better that he receives medical follow-up at the club.”
Norway face Spain on Saturday and Georgia next Tuesday, so it seems like Haaland is in a race to be fit for Man City’s games after the international break.
Which games could he miss?
After the international break Man City are playing in the first game of the weekend as they host Liverpool on Saturday, Apr. 1 at the Etihad Stadium.
It seems like Haaland could be struggling to be fully fit for that game, and maybe even the trip to Southampton on Apr. 8, so Pep Guardiola may choose to rest him for their massive UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Bayern Munich on Apr. 11.
Given the form Haaland is in right now, it will be a blow for City if he does miss the next few games but the last thing they want is any long-term damage. Plus, it’s helpful to have the likes of World Cup winner Julian Alvarez in reserve to step in for Haaland.
