Lost among the late breaking deals of another exciting Deadline Day was the curious case of Luis Suarez, who, rest assured Kopites, is happy at Liverpool and gave no thought to a late summer switch.
Funny how that happens.
After Suarez sank his chompers into the forearm of Branislav Ivanovic last April, speculation arose concerning the Uruguayan international’s potential transfer out of Anfield. Even Ivanovic’s classic response to the situation one month later – “I forgive him – for me that can happen” – couldn’t lift the cloud surrounding Suarez.
Sensing an exit point, Suarez embarked on a three month flee-Liverpool campaign that began with wanting to leave England because he didn’t like the press and ended with shouts of his desire to play Champions League football.
Intelligently, Liverpool didn’t budge.
‘Sit down and be quiet, Luis,‘ the Anfield club effectively told him. Every time Suarez squirmed throughout the three month drama period, this was Liverpool’s response. Eventually, they told him to apologize to the team. Which he did.
Credit to the Reds higher-ups for the impressive man management of a player with complex inner workings yet who is undoubtedly one of the best in the world at his respective profession.
In fact, the treatment seems to have worked so well that Suarez decided to discuss his current mindset earlier today: “For me, it has been closed for some time,” he told the Daily Mirror. “I made the decision to stay at Liverpool some weeks ago and I want to stay and work for the team from now on.”
Amazing how that old fighting spirit resurrects in a man when his team sits top of the league. His plan is simple: “I will go back to Liverpool to play and I hope to be the same player the fans can trust.”
And just so no one gets it twisted, the man loves the ‘Pool. “I said I wanted to play in the Champions League,” Suarez said, “but when that didn’t happen, I knew I’d be happy with life to have my future at Liverpool.”
That’s dedication, people. Weeks upon weeks of dedication.
Luis Suarez, one of the greatest characters in world football.
