Sami Khedira claims Manchester United failed in a bid to buy him

The sting from the summer transfer market keeps getting worse for Manchester United after Sami Khedira claims the Old Trafford club failed in a bid to buy him from Real Madrid.

Speaking at press conference for the German national team, Khedira spilled the beans: “The club turned down the [$53 million (€40m)] offer and that was it. We didn’t really have the chance to discuss it. I had a longer chat with Carlo Ancelotti a few weeks ago and it was relatively clear to me that I’d stay at Real.”

Madrid’s decision to sell fellow countryman Mesut Ozil to Arsenal on a $66 million (€50m) deal was likely a significant reason for rejecting the move. That transfer, which Khedira noted was difficult given the pair’s friendship “[was] a loss also from a sporting perspective,” as Khedira considered Ozil to be a difference maker.

For United, Khedira becomes the latest in a long line of mis-fires by David Moyes in an attempt to boost his squad. After deals for Thiago Alcântara, Cesc Fábregas, Ander Herrera and Khedira all went south, Moyes was forced to go back to the well to sign Marouane Fellaini.

Missing out on Khedira and buying Fellaini becomes and even more suspicious move when considering United’s primary objective was to buy a creative attacking midfielder and Ozil was on the market. Surely United would have known of Arsenal’s interest in Ozil and Madrid’s willingness to sell the player but for some unknown reason Moyes was not inclined to put in a bid.

For a manager who earlier this summer answered “yes, absolutely,” when asked if United had £60 or £70 million to spend on a player, it’s curious as to why Moyes did not try to pip Ozil from the hands of Arsenal.

If Jose Mourinho were in that position it’s pretty clear what would have happened.
