MLS Video: Big Mama and the peculiar contract

On paper, a goal bonus sounds like a great idea – give a player an incentive to score goals, and the team will benefit, right?

In the case of Senegalese striker Mamadou Diallo, not so fast.  The Tampa Bay Mutiny welcomed him from his native African country in 2000, and he proceeded to fire in a monstrous 28 goals.

Alongside Carlos Valderrama, Diallo was a force to be reckoned with.  But when the Colombian departed Tampa Bay, Diallo’s goal tally dwindled, the contract – bonuses and all – had a clearly negative effect on both player and club.
