Greenpeace activists delay UEFA Champions League contest

Greenpeace activists briefly delayed one of Tuesday’s group play matches in UEFA’s Champions League.

Activists protesting Russian gas supplier Gazprom repelled from the roof of Basel’s St. Jakob-Park, where UEFA officials are likely to have something to say, sanction-wise, about flagging security in allowing such a thing to take place.

The activists (presumed to be from Greenpeace) climbed down from ropes in the sixth minute of Tuesday’s match between Swiss side FC Basel and Germany’s Schalke. The protesters also unfurled a huge batter, which read: “Gazprom. Don’t Foul The Arctic.”

The match was halted but soon re-started, with time added on before intermission. Schalke (where U.S. international Jermaine Jones plays) won, 1-0.
