San Jose interim manager Mark Watson certain has given his bosses something to think about.
In fact, it seems like the guy did enough to make this thing something of a “no-brainer.”
No, the Earthquakes could not quite get into the playoffs. But you could make a case that San Jose finishes 2013 as one of the stronger MLS clubs – just one that couldn’t overcome such an awful start.
Watson says all he did was exploit some opportunities as players got healthy, returning the team to its previous identity by refocusing on some basics. Simple enough, right?
Either way, Watson finished with an 11-5-3 after taking over for Frank Yallop in the spring.

They came up just a little short of the playoffs, but being in the much-tougher West this year had a lot to say about that. (Give any MLS playoff club the choice of facing fading Montreal, which will probably make it out of the East, or San Jose, and it’s not even a contest.)
Watson finished his “campaign” to become the ‘Quakes top man with a 2-1 win over FC Dallas. The win is even more impressive considering that San Jose played a big mid-week match, qualifying for next year’s CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, something else that puts a big checkmark in Watson’s personnel file.
This was also the final match for FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman, who has already announced his intention to resign at season’s end.
