Arturo Vidal cleared to play…defense?

World-class midfielder Arturo Vidal has been granted FIFA clearance to play for his club Juventus despite missing Chile’s friendlies with England and Brazil.

Normally, FIFA’s “five-day rule” wouldn’t allow such an appearance, but now Vidal can play for the Bianconeri this weekend against Livorno.

Good news for Juventus, because they’re basically out of defenders.

The central midfielder with five goals in the Serie A season may be forced into the back line.

Angelo Ogbonna is on a red card suspension, Leonardo Bonucci is out for too many yellow cards, Stephen Lichtensteiner has been out since the beginning of October with a thigh injury, and Andrea Barzagli may also not be fit.

That leaves just Giorgio Chiellini to man the center of the back line.

With Antonio Conte struggling with numbers at the back, Vidal could slide in as an emergency replacement.

But he better be careful, because he’s also on just a yellow card.
