One of the league’s best defenses against one of the best offenses – what gives?
We’ll find out at 8:30 am ET as Tottenham Hotspur’s staunch defense visits the blue side of Manchester live on NBCSN or online at NBC Sports Live Extra.
Jan Vertonghen and his Spurs back line will look to deal with the suddenly potent front-line partnership of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo at the Etihad.
The Belgian defender, however, remains on the left side of defense as an injury cover for Danny Rose, who remains sidelined with an ankle injury.
It appears today City will go with a proper 4-4-2, sitting Fernandinho and Yaya Toure in the middle of the pitch supported by Jesus Navas and an in-form Samir Nasri on the wings. With Vincent Kompany still sidelined, Martin Demichelis gets the start in the middle of defense.
Joe Hart also remains benched, with Costel Pantilimon continuing duty between the sticks for the Citizens.
For Tottenham, Sandro and Paulinho continue to do work in the middle of the pitch with Moussa Dembele continuing to ride the bench. New boy Erik Lamela starts today instead of Andros Townsend on the right wing, while Christian Eriksen is injured.
Also for Spurs, Younes Kaboul is in at central defense, taking Vertonghen’s spot, with Vlad Chiriches back to the bench.
Manchester City – Pantilimon, Zabaleta, Demichelis, Nastasic, Clichy; Navas, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Nasri; Negredo, Aguero.
Bench – Hart, Richards, Lescott, Garcia, Milner, Guidetti, Dzeko.
Tottenham Hotspur – Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Verthongen; Sandro, Paulinho; Lennon, Holtby, Lamela; Soldado
Bench – Friedel, Chiriches, Dembele, Townsend, Sigurdsson, Adebayor, Defoe.
Added note: today’s match is Michael Dawson’s 300th match for Spurs, making him the 44th player to accomplish that feat for the London club.
