Just when you thought Manchester United’s season was turning the corner, wham, Everton deal them yet another heavy blow on Wednesday night.
The Toffees hadn’t won at Old Trafford for 21 years in the league and you just knew Manchester United manager David Moyes’ old side would come back to haunt him, in his first-ever match up against the club he managed for over 11 years.
Everton defender Bryan Oviedo sealed the win in the 86th minute as he popped up at the back post to score his second goal in as many games since replacing the injured Leighton Baines at left back.

Following the defeat, Moyes couldn’t hide his frustration after his side put in another poor performance and suffered their fourth defeat of the season.
“I’m very disappointed. We needed a bit of good fortune and we didn’t get it,” Moyes said. “Everton kept at it and showed us what a good team they are. We didn’t defend the goal well enough so it was our own doing. We had some chances as well, as did Everton. They have been playing well and that’s why they are up near the top of the league.”
United are now languishing in ninth spot with over a third of the season gone.
United’s midfield once again looked disjointed as Marouane Felliani — United’s only real addition over the summer from Everton for $37 million — looked a shadow of his former self against his old club. All over the pitch United didn’t take the initiative and Everton walked away with a deserved three points, giving their new boss Roberto Martinez a massive scalp.

Moyes, who was in charge of the Goodison Park outfit for over 11 years and only left this summer, isn’t surprised his old club have been performing so well this season as the Toffees are now in fifth spot, four places and five points ahead of United. After the game Moyes deflected the spotlight away from himself and instead spoke about how his side have a long way to go to be challenging for the title this season.
“It wasn’t about me tonight,” Moyes said. “I was fortunate to manage Everton and I’m fortunate to be managing Manchester United. It’s a big catch up for us now.”
Big catch up is right, United now sit twelve points behind league leaders Arsenal.
