Ian Darke will be your No. 1 announcer for US matches at World Cup

Martin Tyler’s role as ESPN’s No. 1 play-by-play man for the World Cup is now a one-off deal, as the Associated Press is reporting that Ian Darke will handle the lead duties this summer.

Tyler did the job justice during 2010 in South Africa, but Darke has emerged for the network in coverage of United States men’s national team matches as well as other soccer coverage.

Tyler released a statement that:

“Ian Darke made a long-term commitment to ESPN. That commitment deserves to be rewarded by Ian being the lead commentator at World Cup 2014 for ESPN. With that in mind, it was only right and proper for me to offer to stand down.”

According to the report, Darke will call all U.S. matches as well as the World Cup opener (in addition to plenty of other matches).
