Barcelona haven’t been having the best of seasons under Gerardo Martino – at least, not for Barcelona, whose standards are rather high. Currently sitting second in La Liga, behind Real Madrid, Barca have also been battling to ensure Atlético Madrid don’t take the title. And now they’ve gone and lost to Real Valladolid, who are currently battling relegation.
Fausto Rossi scored the only goal of the match in the 17th minute. The ball took deflections off two Barcelona defenders before falling to Rossi’s feet. He wasted no time firing off a low shot, beating Victor Valdés to give the hosts the lead.
Valladolid’s win was deserved, as, for the most part, the visitors put on a poor show. Lionel Messi did have a terriffic chance prior to Rossi’s goal, but Diego Mariño made a fantastic one-handed save to keep the match scoreless.
Barcelona looked better in the second half, after what must’ve been quite a talking to from Martino. In the 57th minute, Neymar found himself alone in space, but the ball took a bounce and the Brazilian could only hook his shot over the crossbar.
The loss means the Catalonians could find themselves down into third by the end of the La Liga weekend. Atleti are away to Celta Vigo, currently in eleventh, later on Saturday, while Real play host to eighth-placed Levante tomorrow.
