Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has pledged his future to the club, signing a contract extension that will keep him there until 2019.

The announcement was made at a peculiar time following an emergency general meeting to elect the successor to convicted former club president Uli Hoeness.

Once that meeting concluded Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge decided to lighten things up by noting that Neuer had extended his contract by three years.

“Our goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has today extended his contract to 2019,” Rummenigge said. “It is a sign of his wonderful character that he said: ‘Bayern forever’. For that I would like to thank Manuel Neuer.”

Since joining the Bavarian giants from Schalke 04 in 2011, Neuer has helped guide the club to a Champions League title, two Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal title, a DFP-Supercup, a Club World Cup and a UEFA Super Cup.

Widely considered the best goal-keeper in the world, Neuer has won a number of individual honors including the 2013 IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper, was shortlisted for the FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2012 and 2013, and was named to the 2013 FIFA/FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year.
