Liverpool need a win at St. James’ Park today, but it’s not just Newcastle that controls the Reds’ destiny (Watch the game at 10am ET on NBCSN or live online via NBC Sports Live Extra).
As you all certainly know, Liverpool’s title hopes rest on West Ham causing an upset at the Etihad today. Manchester City are currently on top, and with just a point they will be the Premier League champions. But the Irons are good at causing upsets, so there’s no reason for Liverpool to abandon all hope just yet.
No one’s really talking about the possibility of Newcastle causing an upset – probably because Newcastle have been really, really bad recently. Their excellent early-season form meant they escaped the relegation battle that plagued half the league, but prior to last week’s win over Cardiff, the Magpies had lost six straight, and had failed to score in five of those matches.
But hey, they could still do their best to ruin a potential party.
Of course, Newcastle’s ability to rain on parades would probably be greater if Loïc Rémy was in the squad. Apparently showing up to watch Arsenal wasn’t seen in the best light by his current employers. Alan Pardew makes a handful of changes to the side that won 3-0 last week, but Shola Ameobi, who scored the opener, remains in place up top.
Brendan Rodgers has made to changes to the lineup that broke down against Crystal Palace last week. Daniel Agger returns to defense, replacing Mamadou Sakho, while Jordan Henderson comes in for Lucas.
