US goes from elation to misery as Altidore comes off with apparent hamstring injury

Jozy Altidore is down.

With the United States up 1-0 thanks to Dempsey’s early goal, the US striker pulled up lame while chasing a ball down the left touchline in the 21st minute.

He immediately grabbed both his left leg and his face in severe pain, and was carried off on a stretcher.

Altidore was replaced by Aron Johannsson, with Jurgen Klinsmann forced into an early change.

The injury appeared to be very serious, as Altidore held his face the entire way off, grimacing in pain.

The United States will no doubt miss his physical presence up front, and – depending on the diagnosis – he could very well miss the rest of the tournament, especially if there is a muscle tear involved.  Even best-case scenario would likely see a strain keep him out for much of the group stage.

Teams are not allowed to replace players on the roster once the tournament has started.

UPDATE: Reports indicate Jozy’s injury is just a strain, not a tear.
