Game on: Lineups and more as Algeria attempts to shock Germany, world

Let’s lay the cards on the table: an Algeria win over Germany would be one of, if not the, biggest World Cup moments of all-time.

With that said, it’s not entirely out of the question for the Desert Foxes to spring forward into the quarterfinals. The United States showed that it’s possible to limit Germany’s chances and some would argue that Islam Slimani and Sofiane Feghouli are better attacking options that the Yanks had at their disposal to counter the Germans.

Germany: Neuer; Mustafi, Mertesacker, Boateng, Höwedes; Lahm (C), Schweinsteiger Özil, Kroos, Götze, Müller

Algeria: M’Bolhi, Mandi, Belkalem, Halliche, Ghoulam, Feghouli, Lacen, Taider, Mahrez, Soudani, Slimani

Talking points

– Is Algeria brimming with confidence, or a bit sated by their first Round of 16 appearance? It seems a tad bit absurd to say a national team could relax on such an elevated stage, but there may be a bit more urgency — as nebulous as that term can be — from the Germans.

– Can Germany turn the offense back up? The Germans were limited to one goal by the States and had to battle back to get a pair against Ghana. Sunday’s 1-0 win was the nation’s first time scoring less than two goals since a May friendly against Poland that saw only two players who will start today (Höwedes and Mustafi).
