If you stayed up late on Wednesday night to watch the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers battle it out in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal, you made a good decision.

Seattle triumphed 3-1, eventually, as yet another pulsating Cascadia clash played out.

Played in the tight, atmospheric surroundings of Seattle’s Starfire Stadium, fans¬†crammed in to witness Osvaldo Alonso break the deadlock with a moment of brilliance.

In the 68th minute Lamar Neagle chipped a delightful ball to the back post and the ‘Honey Badger’ turned himself into a whirling dervish to somehow volley the ball home in mid-air with the back of his foot. The ball cannoned off the post and past Donovan Ricketts, as the entire crowd looked on in awe.

Watch the video above to see Alonso’s superb strike, plus the rest of the highlights are well worth a watch too. Portland equalized deep into stoppage time through Darlington Nagbe, then in extra time the Timbers were reduced to 10-men in a feisty encounter as Diego Chara was shown a straight red.

Seattle made the most of their one-man advantage, as Kenny Cooper and Marco Pappa scored late on to make it 3-1 and set up an Open Cup semifinal with the Chicago Fire on August 13 at CentruyLink Field. It is the seventh time in eight years that Seattle have made the final four of the knockout competition.
