Report: Arsenal nearing capture of Colombian goalkeeper Ospina

Arsenal has been searching hard for a quality backup to goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, and are closing in on Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, according to Colombian reports.

Argentinian media have also corroborated the story.

Ospina, currently with French club Nice, was a part of the Colombian squad that took the World Cup by storm.  Their star was forward James Rodriguez, but Ospina’s back line allowed just four goals over five World Cup matches.

Szczesny’s number-2 last season, Lukasz Fabianski, had his contract run out and it was not renewed after seven seasons at the Emirates. He has since signed with Swansea City.

The reports tab Ospina with a price tag in the range of $5 million.  He speaks fluent French, always a good thing when Arsene Wenger is in charge. The Arsenal boss was on hand at the World Cup working as an analyst for French TV.

The Gunners were also linked with Cardiff City’s David Marshall, who was one of their few bright spots in a relegation season, but the reports suggest Ospina’s lower price is attracting the Londoners to him instead.

While moving clubs would be a step up for Ospina, he clearly would see a drop in playing time barring an unforseen injury to Arsenal’s current number-1, and as the starter of a national side, regular game time is usually a positive thing even for a lesser club.  He made 29 Ligue 1 appearances last year, missing out only on a small stretch due to a knee problem.

Arsenal looks to put some shine back on an impressive season when it hosts Wolves on Championship Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners led the Premier League for much of the season but have faded badly down the stretch, with just two eight points from their last eight games.

Wolves have won four times in that same stretch to secure another season in the Premier League, but the club has not secured the services of manager Julen Lopetegui.

The 56-year-old Spaniard needs to know whether Wolves will be able to properly address their squad in the transfer window, citing Financial Fair Play concerns as a possible problem for his future at Molineux.

Heading into Championship Sunday, Crystal Palace (44 points) simply need to better Chelsea’s results against Newcastle to finish 11th in the Premier League. Key storylines & star players

Since Hodgson replaced Patrick Vieira on March 21, Crystal Palace have been in fine form and promptly exited the relegation scrap themselves. The Eagles have enjoyed an incredible run (5W-2D-2L) in nine games under Hodgson, immediately on the back of a 12-game winless skid which started with the new year and ended on Hodgson’s return nearly three months later.

It has been a similar story for Nottingham Forest, only without the midseason managerial change. The Reds were in big trouble as April wound down, but then they reeled off three wins in their last five games (3W-1D-1L) to guarantee themselves a second season in the Premier League.

Aston Villa vs Brighton, live! Score, updates, how to watch, videos

Aston Villa host Brighton on Sunday focused on one thing: win and they’re in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Villa Park will be rocking on the final day of the season.

STREAM LIVE ASTON VILLA v BRIGHTON

Villa have not been in Europe for 13 years and Unai Emery has done an incredible job to turn them from relegation candidates in November to being on the brink of European qualification in May. Their 1-1 draw at Liverpool last time out helped them get into this situation as they sit in seventh place (seventh qualifies you for the Europa Conference League qualifiers next season), which is one point above Spurs and two above Brentford heading into the final game of the season.

Brighton have already sealed their historic qualification to Europe as Roberto de Zerbi’s side drew with Manchester City on Wednesday to seal sixth place and qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage. The Seagulls have been sensational all season long and even though they may lose some key players this summer, they will be able to reinvest in the next wave of young talents and they’ll be a lot of fun to watch in the Europa League.

Key storylines & in-form players to watch

Aston Villa were excellent at Liverpool as they were very dangerous in the first half with Ollie Watkins causing chaos, while Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey were all superb surging forward from midfield. In the second half they dug in defensively and rode their luck but that point has put European qualification in their own hands. The best thing about this Villa side is that they have incredible balance and every single player knows exactly what they are supposed to do.

Brighton were superb against Manchester City as Roberto de Zerbi rotated his lineup and it worked extremely well. They are a joy to watch and teenager Julio Enciso smashed home a stunner to grab the point which secured their spot in the Europa League group stage.
