Chelsea nabs Brazil, Atleti defender Filipe Luis to bolster back line

The Blues may have lost a Luiz this summer, but they’ve now gained a Luis.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has fortified his back line for the upcoming season by scooping up Atletico Madrid and Brazil defender Filipe Luis.

The 28-year-old will enter the fold in the left back spot vacated by Ashley Cole, who landed in AS Roma on July 7. Luis becomes the second Atleti player to join the Blues this offseason, with Diego Costa formalizing his move earlier this week.

Luis joins a unit with Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, John Terry and Kurt Zouma amongst others.

The Brazilian defender has signed a three-year contract and will wear the no.5 shirt.

On signing, the 28-year-old said: ‘This move is a dream come true for me. I now have the opportunity to play for Chelsea, and also in the Premier League.

‘I’m very happy and looking forward to getting started and giving my best for the team during the coming seasons.’

A solid, attack-minded left-back, Luis was an integral member of the Atletico Madrid side which won La Liga and reached the Champions League final last season.

Luis made 127 appearances for Atletico after moving between Real Madrid B and Deportivo La Coruna in loan stints from Uruguayan club Rentistas.
