Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has moved further west than Manchester United supporters were hoping, as the Belgian back sealed a move to Barcelona this weekend.
Vermaelen, 28, will net the Gunners about $25 million. More importantly for Barca fans — who could be facing a transfer ban quite soon — he shores up a defense that really struggled to meet its standards last season.
He’ll join up with Dani Alves, Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique and new signing Jeremy Mathieu, as they will be forced to deal with an absolutely-loaded Real Madrid.
It’s a five-year deal for Vermaelen, who will wear No. 23 at Barca, which opens the La Liga season on Sunday, Aug. 24 against Elche.
The Catalan club also added Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic to go with new keepers Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
