Americans Abroad preview: Fabian vs. Schalke, Guzan gets Liverpool

It must feel insufferably long for American fans who watch European ball just to see their favorite USMNT players on the club pitch.  After all, the States beat the Czech Republic 1-0 last week but sat through the final few days of the international break without a match after the Sept. 9 proposed fixture with Colombia fell through too late to find a replacement opponent.

Fear not, fans of Yanks abroad, club ball begins again this weekend. And many of your boys are on the pitch (while the USWNT squares off with Mexico on Sept. 13 and 18).

In the Premier League, Sunderland is at home to Tottenham and Black Cats forward Jozy Altidore will be hoping to get some playing time for the hosts, while Everton keeper Tim Howard is on the road against slow-starting West Bromwich Albion. Current USMNT No. 1 backstop Brad Guzan will be away to Liverpool, the opponents being without Daniel Sturridge.

Shea joins Jonathan Spector and Will Packwood at Brum, recreating the most American roster in England since Stoke boasted Maurice Edu, Geoff Cameron and Shea. Brum plays Leeds early Saturday.

Also on Saturday, recent American debutant Emerson Hyndman and Fulham face Reading, while Tim Ream and Bolton mix it up against Wolverhampton.

Sunday is when table-topping defender Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest look to continue their hot start with a huge match against last year’s darlings, American-owned Derby County.

Over to Germany… Perhaps the biggest match for any Yank will see Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach playing host to fellow European rival Schalke (former home of Jermaine Jones).

It’ll be John Anthony Brooks and Hertha Berlin hosting Mainz on Saturday, while Timmy Chandler’s Eintracht Frankfurt is at home to Augsburg.

In France…  Nantes can move as high as No. 2 in Ligue 1 if Ale Bedoya and company can power the Canaries to a road win on Sunday at Lille.

To Norway’s Tippeligean… Bob Bradley leads Michael Stephens, Andrew Jacobson and Stabaek into Kristiansand to take on IK Start on Sunday. A win or tie keeps them mid-table, though their opponents could jump them with three points of their own.
