Casillas: Real Madrid fans ‘entitled to complain’ after Atletico loss

A 2-1 defeat at the hands of their crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid wasn’t what the La Liga giants Real Madrid expected at the Bernabeu.

And not all Real supporters took well to the showing, as some fans whistling at goalkeeper Iker Casillas following Tiago’s 9th minute near post score. The chants were heard in the 15th minute and then two minutes later at a louder clamor, well before the game actually ended. Certain fans in one section actually tried to back the keeper, though, shouting his name in an attempt to encourage a change of mood.

Despite the outward displeasure directed toward him, the 34-year-old actually backed the sentiment of the fans because he believes there should always be an expectation to perform suitably.

“The fans are disappointed with the team and a defeat for Madrid hurts them as much as it hurts us,” Casillas said, via AS. “We’re disappointed for the club and for the supporters. We didn’t play as well as we needed to and it was the same situation in San Sebastian against Real Sociedad.”

“The fans’ views are to be respected. If they feel the need to whistle then we need to accept this and keep working hard. We need to change the dynamic. They’re entitled to complain and my way of responding is the only way I know — playing football.”
