USMNT youngster Julian Green is on the field for Hamburg and playing his first minutes of his Bundesliga career.

On loan from parent club Bayern Munich, Green was on the bench for Munich’s first two matches before being sent out on loan just before the international break.

He earned the start after a number of Hamburg attackers picked up an injury, including Nicolai Müller, Ivo Ilicevic, and Dutch veteran Rafael Van Der Vaart.

It was reported during the week by German publication Kicker that he would make his debut, and Hamburg complied.  The start is also Green’s first professional league debut, having played exclusively for Bayern’s youth team aside from his handful of bench appearances.

Currently the match has passed the half-hour mark and Hamburg trail Hannover 96 2-0 on goals from Leon Andreaeson and Artur Sobiech inside the opening 25 minutes.

Hamburg, a relatively storied Bundesliga club, narrowly avoided relegation last season on a one-game playoff.
