Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic is set to have surgery to repair a broken nose suffered in Tuesday evening’s 3-2 loss to Olympiakos in the UEFA Champions League.
The injury was sustained in the 3rd minute when Mandzukic took an elbow to the face from Pajtim Kasami. Undeterred, the Croatian striker played out the entire 90 minutes, bagging a goal for his efforts.
Atletico released a statement on Wednesday confirming the injury and surgery:
“Tests on Wednesday show Croatian Mario Mandzukic suffered a broken nose. He will undergo surgery on Thursday 18, at 9pm in the FREMAP Majadahonda clinic.”
According to AS, the surgery will keep the 28-year-old out at least two weeks. The former Bayern Munich man, who signed a four-year deal with Atletico in July, has two goals in five matches with the Rojiblancos this season.
